I have this silly idea.

As a blogger, I like to write. I feel I’m very creative and I would like to write something more substantial than just blog posts. Unfortunately, I’m afraid of failure and criticism. My grammar isn’t the best and I’ve never thought out a book. I feel I’m not alone in this.

I decided to do something about it though. I want to write a story. I want to self-publish that story. I’m not sure I’m good enough, but I would like to get a rough draft out there for people to honestly tell me. I figure, money talks and bullshit walks.

Kickstarter is a great place if you already have a following. I don’t. My blog doesn’t even get that many hits. If I did Kickstarter I wouldn’t even get close to my goal to fund a book. Honestly, I would be scared shitless to know people are backing me and expect me to write something they like. I know I would fail before I even start.

I have an idea though. Based on how many hits I get and how many people really talk to me during the day on G+ and Twitter, I won’t be rolling in the dough. But if they like what I write, they might help me get the word out. If they don’t, then I’m just blogging as normal.

So here is my crazy plan:

1. Change Scary Worlds into a Blook (Blog+book) website.

2. Add a donate button

3. Send a synopsis to a bunch of my online friends so they can give me a thumbs up or down. Also, they can give me ideas to work with.

4. Write a chapter weekly or monthly or bi-somethingly

5. Save the donations for self-publishing or failure reimbursement.

6. Write a book

7. Self-publish that book

8. Keep track of donations and give the finished copy to people that already supported my idea. I don’t know how much money that is, but I’m POSITIVE, if you give me $100 you’ll get a book.

9. Hope! Faith! Fun! Finish it!

Right now, I don’t have a concrete idea. I have several ideas, but nothing set in stone. I’ll start converting my blog and I’ll send out my ideas to my friends when I’m ready.

In the event I do not finish the book, I will return all donations. Unlike Kickstarter, if I turn into vaporware after you’ve funded me, you get your money back. Also, I don’t have to worry about a 30 day funding window. I can write all year long and finish when it’s done. If I don’t get any money or enough funding, I’ll have written my first book ever. Finally! No matter what it’s a win win situation for me.

My readers can drop money in the pot any time they want. If you like a chapter $. If you’ve been reading and decide you like the blook $. If you just like me $. If you want me to shut the hell up $. If you’re super rich and you want me to sleep with your ugly wife $$. No matter what, you get to choose what you want to do with your money with 0 obligation.

My main question to my readers is:

Is this a good idea?

  1. You know, I actually wanted to do something like this… but I’d consider starting off with a few free chapters to gain some traction. :)

I support you in this endeavor.

  2. You never know until you try :)

  3. You might want to look in to participating in NaNoWriMo. It’s a ways off, but that gives you time to pick a story line and develop some rough edges. If you complete the 50k challenge, you have access to deals on writing software and publishing avenues.
